The video card is important to most of Aspyr (and other publisher's) Macintosh games because it determines the level of 3D acceleration and support. We list the minimum video card in the system requirement for all of Aspyr's Mac games, and the following list has the common Macintosh computers, listed in sections, by their built-in video card. If your computer isn't on this list, you may need to go to Apple's support web site and look up your computer in the Specifications or Knowledge Base sections.
However, the best way to verify your video card is to open Apple System Profiler on your computer from the Apple menu, switch to the Devices & Volumes tab, and look down the center until you find the box for Display Card. Open that box to see the card type. Video memory (VRAM) is also shown here, or in the Memory overview on the first tab. This has to be done on the desktop G3 computers, since Apple switched to the Rage Pro in later production of this model.
Also, please note that the Blue & White G3 computer and all G4 tower computers do not have built-in video, they have a video card, and there were quite a few possibilities available. A Rage 128 card is pretty much the minimum, but checking the Profiler is highly recommended to verify what you have.
The progression of "better" video cards for the ATI Rage is Rage IIC, Rage Pro, Rage 128, Radeon. The NVidia GeForce cards are different, but all of them are at least equivalent to the Radeon, if not better. The computers that have built-in video, the iMac models and portable computers, cannot upgrade their video hardware.
Rage IIC
- original 233 MHz iMac (the "Bondi")
- early versions of the desktop G3 computers
Rage Pro
- iMac 266 MHz and 333 MHz models - these all have a CD drive that uses a tray to hold the disc, also called "tray-loading"
- later versions of the desktop G3 computers
- PowerBook G3 Series and Bronze Keyboard models
- original iBook 366 Mhz (no FireWire port)
Rage 128
May also be called Rage Pro 128 or Rage 128 Pro, the important part here is the "128".
- iMac 350 MHz and higher revisions prior to the iMac (Flat-Panel) - these have a slot on the front of the computer where you insert CD discs, also called "Slot-loading"
- PowerBook G3 (FireWire)
- PowerBook G4 400/500 Mhz models
- later revisions of the iBook (has a FireWire port)
Radeon
- PowerBook G4 550/667 MHz models
NVidia GeForce 2MX
