I agree with the earlier reviewer who said conquest was now a better option - especially compared to Civ 3. Also it hasn't been mentioned that there's a huge number of newgovernment and society options. There terrain changes too. If you bought the old versions then you'll love this new "go-faster" version. I love Civ games and they've stuck to the winning formula with this fourth version. Two big improvements that everyone will enjoy is firstly you can order your units to explore - this speeds up the often barren early part of the game. But even better are new stacking rules which basically means that the less adventureous of us can now consider conquest as a winning tactic. Very often in early versions aggressive play peters out when you run out of units or cannot organise them as well as the computer opponents can and stalemate quickly follows, eventually many give up using this tactic except as a last resort or responding only when attacked. I'm a big fan of the series and this latest version is simply the best. Now you can play as any of 18 different empires, each with its own distinct leader, attributes and special units. Fans of the series will be relieved to learn that most changes to the game are to make the combat easier and reduce the economic micro-management in the game.
